The practice was established in 1960 by D. William Brosnan, III, M.D. who moved to Asheville after finishing Emory Medical School and completing his ophthalmology residency at Tulane University. In addition to serving the Asheville are, he also held clinics in Bryson City, Franklin, and Murphy, NC, as there was not an ophthalmologist between Asheville and Knoxville, TN. In 1988, after 28 years, he was forced to retire due to health problems before his son, Walter H. Brosnan, M.D. could join him.

Dr. Walter H. Brosnan grew up in Asheville and earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson University. He finished medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he also completed his ophthalmology residency in 1989 at the Storm Eye Institute. Returning to Asheville, he remained in the office his father had established on Biltmore Avenue until December 2001.

To accommodate the space required for newer technology, and in anticipation of his brother joining the practice, Brosnan Eye Associates move to its present site in Centrepark, which was chosen for its central location and accessibility. Dr. Walter Brosnan specializes in cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, and glaucoma surgery. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Buncombe County Medical Society, and the WNC Ophthalmological Society. He is also an active staff member at Mission Hospitals and Care Partners Health Services. In his spare time, Dr. Brosnan enjoys cycling, snow skiing, hiking, and spending time with his wife and children.

Dr. Thomas M. Brosnan joined Brosnan Eye Associates, PA in 2005.  He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC.  He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.

Upon completion of his residency in 2001, Dr. Brosnan returned to North Carolina and joined the faculty at Duke University as an assistant clinical professor.  While at Duke he served as the lead clinical instructor and service chief for the ophthalmology residency program at the Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Dr. Brosnan is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Buncombe County Medical Society.  He is an active staff member at Mission Hospitals.

Dr. Brosnan lives in Asheville with his wife and two children.  He enjoys mountain biking, cooking and golf.

In January 2008, Winston C. Payne, M.D. joined Brosnan Eye Associates in anticipation of retiring in August 2009. Dr. Payne has practiced in Asheville for over 30 years. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan and completed his residency at Kresgee Eye Institute. He specialized in cataract surgery, muscle surgery for crossed eyes, and eyelid surgery. He looks forward to retiring so he can travel with his wife and spend time with his children and grandchildren.
